It should be noted that the new Netflix production differs significantly from the original due to the fact that it is much darker, which is partly related to satanic rituals and the cult of Lucifer (Satan). This is one of the things that angered Satanists, as they believe that one should not make fun of people’s beliefs and feelings. However, getting to the heart of the dispute, the series features a scene in which the titular Sabrina appears in a place where there is a statue of Baphomet. This statue is the main point of contention between the Satanists and Netflix. As Lucien Graves, the church spokesman, informed on Twitter, the statue used in the series is identical to the one currently in the Church of Satan. Interestingly, Satanists once reserved the right to protect the trademark for the statue of Baphomet, which in a way shows that their outrage may have factual and legal grounds.
Regarding the statue itself, it should be noted that Baphomet is a modified name of Muhammad, and its image was created by occultists who believed it represented the choice between good and evil. However, a similar form of the statue could already be found on Tarot cards, depicting Baphomet as the devil.
Considering the parties involved in the dispute, one must honestly ask whether American Satanists will actually pursue their claims in court. If so, and if they prove their case, they may be entitled to significant compensation from Netflix, but we will likely have to wait a bit longer to find out. For now, Netflix can enjoy the free publicity for its new production.
